Dorothy and Charles Johnman were conservationists at heart. They cherished the legacy that had fallen to them in their lifetime to enjoy, preserve and pass on – the unique and homely benefit of Old Cape houses, spacious domestic gardens and shared joy of music-making. They wished for their home to be a place where music continued to be taught and enjoyed, the gardens surrounding their various properties in Herte Street preserved and cared for so that future generations could be inspired by similar values. To this end, they bequeathed this treasure in the historic core of Stellenbosch to an Education Trust, established in 1996, so that these values could be caried forward from generation to generation, as had been established during and before their lifetime.
