Saxophonist
Josie McClure
Josie McClure is a South African saxophonist based in Stellenbosch and Cape Town. She recently completed her second Master’s degree in Classical Saxophone Performance (Cum Laude) at the Koninklijk Conservatorium Den Haag in the Netherlands under the guidance of Lars Niederstrasser. Josie is an active performer and chamber musician, playing with Novo Duo with pianist Seung-Ree Lee and NorthSouth Duo, a South African-Belgian collaboration with accordionist Kaat Vanhaverbeke.
Her research was an exploration of South African saxophone compositions entitled Finding Home: An Exploration of New South African Art Music Through the Classical Saxophone and Collaborative Practice. This led to the creation of the South African Saxophone Catalogue – an online system dedicated to the documentation and preservation of works by South African composers for saxophone, supported by the De Zaaier Stichting and Skye Foundation. Josie has performed as a soloist with Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra, Namibian National Symphony Orchestra and the Free State Symphony Orchestra, and has received numerous awards, including the Yamaha Scholarship (Dubai) and the Mabel Quick Overseas Bursary. She has participated in masterclasses with renowned saxophonists such as Arno Bornkamp, Timothy McAllister, Nicolas Arsenijevic, Vitaly Valtulya, Eva van Grinsven, Bart van Beneden, Rob Buckland and Jean-Denis Michat. She also had lessons with Raaf Hekkema for several months.
Josie holds a BMus and an MMus (both Cum Laude) from Stellenbosch University, where she focused on composer-performer collaboration and the role of the classical saxophone in South Africa. She has taught at the Stellenbosch Konservatorium, Hoërskool Stellenbosch and The International School of The Hague, and had also established her own private teaching studio in the Netherlands. She is passionate about collaboration, new music, and the development of classical saxophone in South Africa.
